GARDEN AND RECYCLING

OUR STORY

WHERE THERE IS A CHALLENGE, THERE IS AN OPPORTUNITY!

Our challenge was how we would be able to sustain a garden supplying food to a daycare centre and ourselves?

God’s grace, this skill and our passion made it possible and we stand proud today in the work of our hands, both to the children of the day care and our hand-made products.

VEGETABLE GARDEN

Freshly picked vegetables are supplied to the day care on a daily base, including: Spinach, cabbage, butternut, gem squash, tomatoes, onions, carrots, potatoes, beans, etc.

TRAINING @ GARDEN

SMILE Impact trained people how to sow consecutively in order to meet the demand of the daycare, community buying as well as supplying to their own families.

SMILE Impact trained people what to sow when, how to yield the best crop possible by teaching them about the nature of some plants, and how to individually care for each vegetable.

SMILE Impact trained people how to successfully use herbs as a organic means of ensuring less pests, better crops, etc.

RECYCLING

Due to the core attraction of this community, being selling of recycling, we supply cleaned recycling once a week, collected from the Hatfield Christian Church South, to the people working in the garden as an additional means of income.  Thanks to this process at Ekuphumuleni , litter picking is illuminated by not going to dust bins or dump sites.

Adding to the selling of recycling, we teach the people how to make “up-cycled” items which they sell on market days.  These up-cycled items generate a better income than just selling them off as recyclable items to community ‘sellers’ who then in turn sell to the bigger recycling companies.
